Nouvelle-Angleterre, 1850. Un soir, Herman Melville se présente chez un certain Tom Nickerson, un vieil alcoolique tourmenté par d'effroyables souvenirs. Melville lui propose une coquette somme contre une heure de causerie avec celui qui reste le dernier rescapé d'un naufrage survenu trente ans plus tôt. Nickerson était alors matelot à bord du baleinier «Essex» dont on raconte qu'il sombra après avoir été éperonné par un cachalot géant... Le navire était placé sous le commandement de George Pollard, héritier d'une grande lignée de baleiniers. Le fringant et ambitieux Owen Chase le secondait alors.
